On August 26, 2024, the Canadian government issued an announcement that it will impose an additional tariff of 25% on some steel products originating in China starting from October 15 this year. As a representative of China's steel industry, the China Iron and Steel Association expresses firm opposition to Canada's unilateralism and trade protectionism in disregard of facts and WTO rules.

China's steel industry has always focused on meeting the needs of domestic downstream industries, and the export scale of steel products to Canada is small and the proportion is low. In recent years, China Steel has made great efforts in reducing production capacity, ultra-low emission transformation, and low-carbon environmental protection, and has gained widespread recognition from relevant parties at home and abroad. This time, the Canadian government made a unilateral tax decision on Chinese steel products without investigation, undermining the multilateral trading system based on WTO rules and adversely affecting global steel trade and the development of the steel industry.

The Chinese steel industry hopes that Canada will respect the principle of free trade, make prudent decisions fully based on its own circumstances, maintain China-Canada economic and trade relations with practical actions, and jointly create a good international steel trade environment.
